Assignment: Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Research Analysis
Assignment: Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Research Analysis
Architect Daniel Libeskind is credited with saying “To provide meaningful architecture is not to parody history, but to articulate it.” The suggestion is that his work does not copy the efforts of others but relies on it.
Understanding the work of others is critically important to new work. Contributions to the nursing body of knowledge can happen when you are able to analyze and articulate the efforts of previous research. Research analysis skills are therefore critical tools for your toolbox.
In this Assignment, you will locate relevant existing research. You also will analyze this research using a tool helpful for analysis.
To Prepare:
Reflect on the strategies presented in the Resources this Module’s Learning Resources in support of locating and analyzing research.
Use the Walden Library to identify and read one peer-reviewed research article focused on a topic in your specialty field that interests you.
Review the article you selected and reflect on the professional practice use of theories/concepts described by the article.
The Assignment:
Using the “Module 3 | Part 3” section of your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Template presented in the Resources, conduct an analysis of the elements of the research article you identified. Be sure to include the following:
Your topic of interest.
A correctly formatted APA citation of the article you selected, along with link or search details.
Identify a professional practice use of the theories/concepts presented in the article.
Analysis of the article using the “Research Analysis Matrix” section of the template
Write a 1-paragraph justification stating whether you would recommend this article to inform professional practice.
Write a 2- to 3-paragraph summary that you will add to your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan that includes the following:
Describe your approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research.
Identify at least two strategies that you would use that you found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research.
Identify at least one resource you intend to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research.
By Day 7 of Week 5

Solution
Module 3 | Part 3: Research Analysis
I have identified one topic of interest for further study. I have researched and identified one peer-reviewed research article focused on this topic and have analyzed this article. The results of these efforts are shared below.
Step 1: Research Analysis
Topic of Interest: | Experiences of nurses in the provision of dialysis care.
Research Article: Include full citation in APA format, as well as link or search details (such as DOI) | Shahdadi, H., & Rahnama, M. (2018). Experience of Nurses in Hemodialysis Care: A Phenomenological Study. Journal of Clinical Medicine, 7(2), 30. https://dx.doi.org/10.3390/jcm7020030
Professional Practice Use:
One or more professional practice uses of the theories/concepts presented in the article |
Interest in the experiences of nurses in the provision of dialysis care stems from an understanding that there is a shortage of nurses so that measures should be undertaken to improve the experiences of nurses so as to improve retention and reduce turnover. If nurses suffer from any harm (whether mental or physical harm) when providing care, then this harm is likely to have a negative impact on their satisfaction levels. Understanding the harms that nurses suffer when providing dialysis care is important for strengthening management approaches so that their (nurses) satisfaction levels are increased even as quality of care and outcomes are improved.
Research Analysis Matrix
Add more rows if necessary |
Strengths of the Research | Limitations of the Research | Relevancy to Topic of Interest | Notes |
Primary research study conducted in 2017 and published in 2018. | Up to date data that is reliable.
Conducted among population of interest (nurses providing dialysis care). | Links the results to the population of interest.
Qualitative study. | Explores emerging themes.
|
Small number of participants (9 nurses). | Small sample makes it difficult to generalize results for whole population.
|
Study conducted in Zabol, Iran. | Study results may be true for Zabol, Iran, but not necessarily true for nurses in other places.
Explores the experiences of nurses in hemodialysis care. | This is the population targeted by the topic of interest. |
Step 2: Summary of Analysis
Craft a summary (2-3 paragraphs) below that includes the following:
- Describe your approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research
- Identify at least two strategies that you would use that you found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research
- Identify at least one resource you intend to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research
A structured approach was applied to identify and analyze peer-reviewed research. The approach was based on a checklist with five key points to determine if the research was accurate and reliable. Firstly, the checklist determined if the article is written by a scholar as indicated by the credentials and affiliations of the author. Secondly, the checklist evaluated the content of the article, subject matter, what it was about and the intended audience. Thirdly, the checklist evaluated the scientific structure of the article to include the title, sections, headings, formatting and length. Fourthly, the checklist looked at how the article is written in terms of point of view, tone and language. Finally, the checklist looked at the publication type, such as a journal or book (Mayer & Alexander, 2017).
Three strategies were effective in finding peer-reviewed research. The first strategy was to use the university library that is linked to numerous databases. The databases are listed in an index and divided by discipline and name thus facilitating search efforts. Applying this strategy, the search can be conducted in the database using keywords. The second strategy was to conduct a direct search in a database suited for the particular subject or topic. For instance, PubMed and Medline databases are suitable for searching for peer-reviewed articles on nursing topics. The third strategy is to engage the services of the librarian who can figure out which databases are best suited for conducting the search. The three identified strategies also act as good resources for finding peer-reviewed research. The university library is a good resource as it keeps a comprehensive catalogue of databases that are accessible through online searches. In addition, the databases are good resources as they allow for direct searches that are convenient for persons without access to the university library. Besides that, the librarian is a good research for knowing what is in the library and what can be accessed from outside (Mariano & Figliano, 2019).
