QUESTION-Locate a current peer reviewed journal article that applies a nursing theory to guide public health nurses in community care. How can this theory be applied to public health interventions?
Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing theory developed by Dorothea Orem and she broadly defined it as the act of helping others in provision and management of self-care to maintain human functioning at home level. The theory comprises of three parts including theory of self-care, self-care deficit, and nursing systems. This theory can be used to create public health interventions to limit substance abuse among the adolescent and young teenagers (Yin, 2021). Several unhealthy behaviors usually start during the adolescent stage and presents major public health problems. Substance abuse is among unhealthy behaviors that begin during adolescent age often leads to adulthood disorders. Substance abuse is closely related to increased mortality morbidity and often results in costly physical social and mental health conditions. Tobacco use is identified as the leading cause of preventable cause of early deaths and most individuals start when they are in adolescent age. Approximately 1 in 10 girls and 1 in 5 boys aged 13-15 years use to tobacco. Alcohol which is also commonly used by adolescents causes approximately 4% of global disease burden. Cannabis is often used by the adolescents is associated with intelligence quotient decline before 18 years and increased risk among the adults. Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory is crucial in developing interventions to deal with substance abuse. Educating the community and the young teenagers on the consequences of drug abuse. Educating teenagers on drug abuse and the consequences resulting from such engagements will empower them to make the right decisions and take care of themselves without supervision of the adults. Community education will help to create a conducive environment to promote self-care among the adolescents (Das et al., 2016).
