Classmate Response (3): Topic 5 DQ 2 -Several models support the practice of health promotion and disease prevention

QUESTION- Several models support the practice of health promotion and disease prevention. Discuss one model that you can use in the public health setting and provide an example specific to your current situation. Classmate’s response -Tina’s Post- Topic 5 DQ 2

As an advance registered nurse in the educational setting practicing as a school nurse, some strategies that will be utilized in my practice will be guided by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice. To keep up with the change in health care and the evolving health needs of students, the NASN has developed the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing practice as a model to provide guidance for the implementation of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).

The key principles in this framework include Care Coordination, Leadership, Quality Improvement, Community/Public Health, and Standards of Practice, which are foundational for evidence-based, clinically competent, quality care (NASN, 2016). This model is student-centered nursing care that occurs within the context of the student’s family and school community (NASN, 2016). Clinical guidelines are important tools to reduce barriers to EBP and support the delivery of high-quality nursing care in the school setting (Shannon, 2018). It is my goal, to align my practice with the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model, which calls for a collaborative and coordinated approach to learning and health (NASN, 2016).

The Framework for the 21st Century model incorporates the same scope of practice for the individual/family, community, and systems as the Minnesota Department of Health’s public health intervention wheel. The values, goals, and interventions are in alignment with improving quality care to the community.

The Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice provides a guide for nurses practicing in schools to ensure they reach the goal of supporting academic success and student health by creating a healthy and safe school environment. Each principle comprises different practice components that guide nursing practice in schools. The care coordination principle comprises components such as collaborative communication, which guides reciprocal and respectful engagement in the work environment to promote the health and well-being of the students. Other components include student-centered care and care plans, education and counseling, and case management. Components in public health principle include disease prevention, environmental health, and cultural competence. Leadership principle comprises advocacy, policy development and interpretation, and developing models of practice. Components in Quality improvement include data collection and documentation, continuous assessments, and evaluation (National Association of School Nurses 2020). The components in each principle of the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice are similar to the interventions outlined by the Minnesota Department of Health’s public health intervention wheel. Some of the similarities are that both models promote advocacy, collaboration, the delegation of functions, health teaching, and counseling as interventions to promote health (Minnesota Department of Health, 2021).
