QUESTION-Compare two conceptual frameworks that can be used in public health nursing. Select a conceptual framework and apply it to an issue in public health nursing. Apply the nursing process at the micro-level, meso-level, and macro-level for the public health issue you selected
Classmate Response ESSAY- Substance misuse is a serious public health issue. This includes the use of illegal substances and the use of legal substances in an inappropriate manner, that is harmful to an individual’s health status. In 2015, more than 15,000 people died from an overdose on prescribed opioids. In addition, 88,000 people die each year from alcohol related incidents making it the third most preventable cause of death in the United Sates (APHA.ORG, 2021). This public health issue can be addressed by understanding health disparities and evaluation, interventions and education on self care.
There are two nursing theories that could be applied with the issue of substance misuse, the Nursing Process Theory and Self Care Theory. In Ida Jean Orlando’s Nursing Process Theory, the concept is that patients have their own interpretations of experiences and should be validated and incorporated, before drawing conclusions. Theory also states that people become patients when they have a need that they are unable to meet independently due to a physical limitation or barriers to communication that were caused by unfavorable experiences. The nurses responsibility is to seek and assist with immediate needs. The Self Care Theory, created by Dorothea Orem, is about assisting others in the application and management of self care to maintain or improve health status at the home level. In addition to the ability to provide self care.
The nursing process can be applied at the different levels of decision making in healthcare. At the micro level the nursing process is used to identify the issue of the patient and create a plan for management that includes implementation and evaluation. The influence of the professional role is considered at the Meso level of decision making and there is acknowledgement of influential system factors, at the Macro level (Légaré, 2011).

I agree with you that two of the conceptual frameworks that can be applied when it comes to the issue of drug abuse is the nurse’s process theory and the self-care theory. According to Ida Jean Orlando, the nursing process concerns itself with the investigation of the needs of a patient and actively seeks to fulfill such needs in a way that will improve the patient’s condition (Lotfi et al., 2021). According to Jean Orlando, nurses should rely on five stages of the deliberative nursing process, which include assessing the needs of a patient, diagnosing such patients, planning for the care of such patients, implementing the care plans that they have previously laid out for patients and finally evaluating the effectiveness of specific care plan (Lotfi et al., 2021). The deliberative nursing process can be an effective way of understanding the needs of patients, such as the patients who abuse drugs and substances such as opioids, and rely on the nursing process to address such needs.
The self-care theory is also an essential framework that nurses can rely on to improve the condition of patients who abuse drugs which have become a significant public health issue. Considering the self-care theory, the role of nurses among individuals who abuse drugs would therefore be to improve the condition of such patients and to boost the ability of such individuals to perform self-care activities that can help them maintain their well-being, health, and life (Hellqvist, 2021). Considering Orem’s self-care theory, individuals who abuse drugs can therefore be viewed as having a form of self-care deficit that needs to be filled so as to ensure that such individuals live a healthy life. Among individuals struggling with drug abuse, the main role of nurses is, therefore, to reinstate the healthcare ability of such individuals (Hellqvist, 2021).
