Then select five organizations/institutions for the list above and review their websites to learn more about the role of each organization/institution in the healthcare industry.
For this Module Pre-Assessment, locate an additional resource for each of the organizations/institutions you selected and create a list of the resources you would like to use for your Final Assessment.

1. Joint Commission (Jcaho)
2. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
3. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS)
4. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
5. Center for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS)

The Joint Commission is the largest standards-setting, and accrediting body in healthcare. Most states require a health care facility to be accredited as a condition of licensure and Medicare reimbursement. They visit each facility every 36 months to evaluate standards of compliance. On their website www.jointcommission.org there is a plethura of information. What stood out to me was a tool called Safer dashboard. This is a business tool available to Jcaho accredited organizations. Among the many applicable uses as a Nurse Manager was the access to data to identify trends. You can create measurable goals and track the outcomes. Another feature is it allows you to plan, allocate and apply resources including staff training.
Under the recourses there was a tab for nurses. I clicked on that and then on the safety. There is a monthly publication on the latest information and issues regarding patient safety. I signed up to receive this.

The CDC mission statement is “We work 24/7 to protect the safety, health, and security of America from threats here and around the world” (cdc.gov). They are the leading science based, data driven organization in the nation. Under their publications tab, public health law there were many articles of interest. What was most intreging and applicable to my organization was the Telehealth and Telemedicine articles. Specifically the Report called Telehealth and Remote Patient Monitoring use in the Medicare and Selected Federal programs found at www.cdc.gov/phlp/publications/topic/anthologies/anthologies-telehealth.html This report published in April of 2017 released by the United States Government Accountability Office to the Congressional Committees, discusses information involving two other organizations from my list. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) allow certain requirements pertaining to Telehealth and Telemedicine to be waived. One part of the waiver is to allow its beneficiaries to access telehealth in urban areas and at home (cdc.gov). Each state imposes its own regulation for Telehealth and Telemedicine. The Veterans Affairs (VA) does not restrict the use of Telehealth or Telemedicine. These services may occur at any location or combination of locations.
The FDA or Food and Drug Administration is tasked with ensuring the safety and efficacy of medical devices, food, drugs, radiating-emitting devices, vaccines, blood, biologics, cosmetics, tobacco, and animal and veterinary. Many of these topics are directly related to the healthcare field. The site www.fda.gov/food/nutrition-education-resources-materials/health-educators-nutrition-toolkit-setting-table-healthy-eating.com was fun, and interactive. The resources provided were applicable to our patients learning and staff. The handouts were visually appealing and fun to look at. This will draw in the patient to take a further look. They offer a power point presentation I could use in our annual training. Additionally, they offer downloadable tweets and facebook posts. I believe this would make a great addition to our VA facebook page.
The mission of HHS is to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans. CMS is part of HHS. CMS overseas various health insurance programs. They also work to prevent fraud and abuse within the healthcare system. As stated in an article found through the CDC I am most interested in their roles with regards to Telehealth and Telemedicine. I believe that the pandemic of Covid has shed light to the many flaws in our system. The lack of available care for so many allows for easily preventable or manageable conditions to reach the point of requiring hospital admissions. Telehealth removes many barriers to care such as lack of transportation or distance to a clinic.
