Pender’s health promotion theory is one of the nursing theories normally utilized to guide public health nurses in community care. According to Pender, disease prevention and health promotion initiatives should focus on healthcare (Anjani et al., 2020).In drawing up health promotion activities, public health nurses should seek to understand the unique personal characteristics of target individuals and how such experiences may affect their subsequent actions. However, Pender’s health promotion model public health nurses should seek to attain behavioral-specific knowledge related to their target population and the impact of such behavior on the motivation on the propensity of an individual to be involved in given the behaviors (Aqtam & Darawwad, 2018).  Public health nursing actions should therefore aim at modifying the specific behaviors. The desired behavior outcome of health promotion actions should therefore be the adoption of health-promoting behavior among individuals. Healthy behaviors result in improved functional ability, health, and better quality of life among the target individuals (Anjani et al., 2020). According to Pender, immediate competing preferences and demand will also have a big impact on the final behavioral demand in an individual and can derail intended health-promoting actions (Aqtam & Darawwad, 2018).

Pender’s health promotion model can be applied to public health interventions, especially in convening health promotion campaigns.  Through Pender’s health promotion model, the main focus is to prevent the onset of unhealthy behaviors or discourage such behaviors to prevent the onset of disease and illnesses(Anjani et al., 2020). An example of public health interventions utilizing Pender’s health promotion model includes advertisements advocating for regular exercise and healthy eating and initiative the local health care facility is promoting smoking sensations and physical activities, among others. Public health interventions utilizing Pender’s health promotion model focus on eliminating bad behaviors that lead to poor health (Anjani et al., 2020).
