Discussion Question -PHN-600-Topic 6 DQ 2

Considering the unintended effects of public health programs, such as the weakening of acquired immunity which may result in increased outbreaks of a disease after a suspension of public health programs, public health nurses can play a significant role in creating an ethical practice environment.  To prevent such ethical issues related to unintended consequences of public health programs, public health nurses can therefore be involved in advocacy, policy formulation, and research. Through research, public health nurses can therefore conduct experiments related to intended public health programs and explore the benefits and shortcomings of such programs (Hurlimann et al., 2017). Public health nurses can subsequently disseminate their findings to ensure that only ethical public health programs are implemented. On the other hand, by spearheading policy formulation, public health nurses can promote the ethical implementation of public health programs (Hurlimann et al., 2017). Finally, through advocacy, public health nurses can raise awareness related to unintended consequences of already implemented public health programs and mobilize the modification or withdrawal of such programs that pose risks to communities (Hurlimann et al., 2017).

As a public health nurse, I can promote quality ethical practice that supports the well-being of all humans following the bioethical principles of beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. Following the ethical principles of nonmaleficence, I would therefore not promote or participate in public health programs that directly harm the population (Stone, 2018). On the other hand, utilizing the principle of beneficence, I would always contribute and be involved in public health programs that benefit the population (Stone, 2018). Finally, utilizing the principle of justice, I would always seek to introduce public health programs that target marginalized and underserved populations.  Such programs would help to promote equitable access to a healthy lifestyle (Stone, 2018).
