What Are Some Of The Obstacles Or Barriers To Implementing EBP In Nursing

The main barriers to implementing evidence-based practice in nursing can be classified as organizational barriers or individual barriers.  Organizational barriers to the implementation of EBP include heavy workloads, lack of human resources, and lack of sufficient infrastructure (Banakar et al., 2019). When working in a healthcare setting that has a shortage of human resources, nurses will be greatly overworked. Such nurses can therefore struggle to find time to implement evidence-based practices and may also be fatigued in such a way that they will lose interest in EBP implementation. On the other hand, heavy workloads can also lead to mass burnout and promote resistance to change in practice settings which can greatly hinder the implementation of EBP (Mahmoud & Abdelrasol, 2019). Lack of sufficient infrastructure in healthcare settings, including the lack of reliable internet access and the lack of access to a rich library with nursing journals, can also be a significant barrier to the implementation of EBP. Health facilities with poor internet connections and poorly equipped libraries will therefore lack sufficient resources that nurses can utilize in EBP implementation (Banakar et al., 2019).

Individual factors such as age, job experience, educational level, and employment status can be significant barriers to the implementation of EBP. According to Mahmoud & Abdelrasol (2019), young nurses with less job experience are less likely to implement evidence-based practices in care settings. This resistance to implementing EBP among young nurses with less job experience can also be attributed to their education level and their knowledge related to EBP implementation (Banakar et al., 2019). The employment status of a nurse can also significantly affect whether they decide to implement EBP or not. Nurses employed on a contract basis may therefore feel less motivated to implement EBP in care settings compared to nurses employed on a permanent basis (Mahmoud & Abdelrasol, 2019).
