Discussion Question- Topic 5 DQ 1
The implementation of my evidence-based project has entailed the utilization of the Iowa model. Applying the Iowa model, the first step to introducing trauma-informed care interventions in the healthcare department will be to identify the EBP change triggers. The triggers for the EBP change in the health department are problem-focused. This is because traditional approaches of treatment of trauma among children, such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing and prolonged exposure, are not effective among children (Maynard et al., 2019). The second step will be to determine if the introduction of trauma-informed care interventions was a priority for the health department. After determining that the change is a priority, the next step will be to form a team to implement trauma-informed care interventions in the healthcare department. Such a team will be made up of public health nurses and other interdisciplinary stakeholders, including pediatricians and school nurses. The next step will be to gather and analyze scholarly research data related to trauma-informed care interventions through the PICOT question of ‘In children who have gone through a traumatic event (P), the use of trauma-informed care (I) is more effective than the use of specific therapies such as eye movement desensitization(C) in promoting the holistic wellbeing of children (O) over a period of six months (T)?’The research discovered will then be critiqued and synthesized to support the proposed change of the use of trauma-informed care interventions among children. The presence of sufficient research supporting the implementation of trauma-informed care interventions will lead to implementing such a change through a pilot program. The public health nurses will then evaluate the pilot program, and its effect on improving outcomes among children with trauma in the healthcare department noted. If positive changes are noted in the pilot program, the full adoption of trauma-informed care interventions in the health department will follow (Hanrahan et al., 2019).
The most difficult component of implementing my evidence-based project has been constituting an interdisciplinary team to spearhead the EBP project. This is because most healthcare department workers appear too busy and unwilling to volunteer in the EBP implementation project. On the other hand, I believe that researching if the implementation of trauma-informed care interventions will be a priority for the health department has been the easiest step in implementing my EBP project. I would advise my colleagues to first determine their EBP projects’ priority before embarking on implementing such projects in their healthcare facilities.
