In clinical research studies, results can be statistically, clinically significant, or they can be both statistically and clinically significant. Clinically significant evidence refers to the effect’s practical clinical application, whether the result is genuinely real, probable or noticeable. Clinical significance reflects the extent of change intervention has and whether the change makes any difference in the subject’s lives. Clinical significance is assigned to a result when it has tangible and quantifiable effects. On the other hand, statistically significant evidence refers to the situation when the results obtained are unlikely to have occurred due to chance alone. It measures whether the differences between the treatment and the control group are genuine or they happened by chance. Usually, a p-value of 5% or lower value is considered statistically significant. Statistical significance indicates whether the study results are reliable, (McShane et al., 2019).
How would each of these findings be used to advance an evidence-based practice project?
Evidence-based practice refers to a process involving the collection, processing, and implementation of research findings to advance clinical practice and improve the work environment and patient outcomes. Both statistically and clinically significant evidence is essential in an evidence-based practice project. Statistical significance in an evidence-based practice project is crucial in determining that the observed occurrences are not due to chance, but actual relationship exists. It helps to explain the relationship between the different components involved in the project. Clinical significance in an evidence based-project is used to support the interventions implemented in the project. Statistical significance should be determined before clinical significance since statistically, significant evidence is likely to be clinically significant, (Amoji-Olivo, 2018).
