The quality of care in healthcare depends on how the administration or healthcare practitioners give quality care to patients. This can be how nurses are diligent in their work, such as providing adequate attention to patients’ needs during peak and off-peak hours. Also, it can be the quality of healthcare services given to patients, which include the presence of advanced technologies for treating patients with various health conditions

Moreover, healthcare quality can be determined by the hygiene standards maintained by healthcare practitioners, such as observing hygiene to prevent secondary infections in a hospital. In the case of the Sunlight Hospital in California, the reason patients might be complaining about poor quality is poor customer service whereby employees seem more focused in completing their tasks than attending to patients’ needs. This problem can also affect other care services offered at the hospital, including hospital equipment available for patients, effectiveness in decision-making processes, and care management. This essay will focus on care quality problems that most healthcare organizations face and conclude that Sunlight Hospital should focus on to improve its quality of care by introducing guidelines that employees should adopt to ensure they give patients adequate attention.

The first measurement of quality that is used in a hospital is mortality. This quality measurement is significant because the effectiveness of hospital services is determined by the effort the institution invests in preventing patients’ deaths. For example, patients that are diagnosed with a single health complication can also have other underlying hidden health problems that health practitioners may fail to identify. This occurs in health institutions where the health staffs are focused on completing their tasks rather giving patients the best care services. According to Benbow and Jordan (2016), the efficiency of hospitals presently is measured by how they reduce mortality within a population. For instance, quality healthcare is measured by the reduced mortality rates that hospital record for patients suffering from pneumonia. Hospitals that achieve a 5.6 percent mortality reduction rate for pneumonia are considered effective in care management (Benbow & Jordan, 2016). This is because diseases, such as pneumonia require hospital employees to be more attentive to patients’ symptoms to detect its presence

The second measurement of quality is the safety of care, which pertains to medical mistakes. For example, hospital-acquired infections are often applied as measures for determining the quality of care offered in hospitals. This safety measure is important when choosing hospitals for emergency care for the negligence of care providers can result in increased risks for patients with other health complications, such as diabetes (Benbow & Jordan, 2016). The third measurement of quality is readmissions, whereby hospitals that are reputed with reducing readmission rates are more preferred because this reduced the cost of treatment. This measurement quality can be used in choosing emergency care hospitals since people are likely to choose a hospital; they will not readmit their patients for unnecessary hospital-related health complications. The fourth measurement quality is patient experience, such as care outcome is measured by best practice care guidelines provided and achieved results. Emergency care hospitals with the best care services should prove that emergency patients admitted before have been satisfied with the services offered (Yates, 2015). The last measurement of quality is the timeliness of care, such that healthcare practitioners should reduce overcrowding that is experienced in emergency departments since this is associated with the risk of increased inpatient mortality

Identifying the Needs for Quality Improvement

Before the healthcare team designs a quality improvement plan, the hospital must evaluate problems that have resulted in the need for quality improvement. Some of the issues can be customer complaints, such as the diminished quality of care that Sunlight Hospital patients have reported (Friberg, 2019). The hospital can consider designing its quality improvement plan by identifying what might have caused the denigration of the facility’s reputation in areas of increased length of stay and the lack of attention to customers’ needs.

Organizational and Structural Changes

The quality improvement plan can include making changes in the present structural systems that the hospital uses. For example, Sunlight Hospital might be using a bureaucratic structure that presents the flow of decisions its departments, resulting in the complaints concerning the unattended patients (Yates, 2015). The hospital can consider making organization changes, such as staff empowerment and establishing a council that will be supervising quality adoption and execution.

Protocols to Be Adopted

The quality improvement plan may require the hospital to implement evidence-based practices such as introducing a communication technology to assist employees in attending to patients’ needs in a timely manner (Friberg, 2019). Patients at Sunlight Hospital could improve the quality of care by introducing protocols that direct employees to listen to all patients’ complaints and solve them using the provided clinical guidelines

This strategy can measure the overall impact of the quality of care given in a hospital. For instance, Sunlight Hospital can include this feature in its plan by tracking changes proposed and implemented (Chism, 2015). This can help to improve areas of weaknesses that might be associated with the proposed quality improvement plan.

In conclusion, the quality improvement would add value to the Sunlight Hospital because there will be a reduction in errors, enhanced customer satisfaction, improved health of populations, and reduced cost of care. Patients would choose a hospital reported to have good scores in these areas since they will be confident in receiving the best care
