The Case Study:
A 42-year-old man comes to clinic with chief complaint of pain, redness, and swelling of his right calf. He states that he had been working in his yard using a string trimmer when the trimmer slipped and cut his leg. He cleaned the wound with water from the garden hose and covered the wound with a large Band-Aid. Several days later, he developed fever to 100.6˚ F and chills and noticed that his leg was swollen and red. He comes to the emergency department for definitive care.

Introduction

Host defenses against invading pathogens are fundamental physiological mechanisms shared by all living things. Since the first eukaryotic cells appeared, several defensive mechanisms have developed to ensure cellular integrity, equilibrium, and host survival (Gourbal et al., 2018). This paper examines a case study of a 42-year-old man who went to a clinic complaining of redness and swelling on his right leg. It goes through the patient’s symptoms and diagnosis and the genes involved, and the immunosuppressive.

Presentation of Symptoms

According to the case study, the patient wounded himself with a string trimmer and then washed the wound with perhaps contaminated water. It is uncertain if he proceeded to care for the wound; however, the patient suffered fever, chills, redness, and swelling after a few days. With all these symptoms, the client had most likely acquired cellulitis. Cellulitis is a frequent soft tissue illness contributing to about 10% of hospital admissions (Ko et al., 2018). Cellulitis develops whenever there is a break in the skin’s integrity, causing germs to enter the body and cause infections. The condition might have been exacerbated by a failure to care for the injury. Nevertheless, there might be an undiagnosed underlying immunological disease.

Genes Associated

Cellulitis is not an illness until it is chronic. Genes related to it are a person suffering from an autoimmune condition or having a weakened immunity. This illness is associated with the gene coding for Tumor Necrosis Factor (Ko et al., 2018). This gene codes for a multifaceted proinflammatory cytokine from the tumor necrosis factor domain. This protein can be present in the human body and has been connected to various inflammatory diseases.

Immunosuppression

Immunosuppression reduces the immunological system’s capabilities to respond to external antigens. Immune deficits can be primary or secondary. When immunocompromised, phagocytes, antibodies, lymphocytes, and proteins all suffer. Due to the general immune system impairment, this client may be more susceptible to cellulitis and much harder to treat.

Conclusion

This case report was to be examined. It was discovered that the patient most obviously had cellulitis; nevertheless, lab testing and wound culture may be performed to make an indisputable diagnosis. TNF is the gene linked to this illness, and the process of immunosuppression and how it impacts the body’s systems were clarified.
