The article titled Good Leaders Acknowledge Their Employees, Often authored by Mook (2021), addresses the challenges faced by organizational leaders in motivating their workers amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Mike explains that the measures undertaken in response to the pandemic have brought significant challenges that have increased stress among the employees. In many cases, the employees have been compelled to be working from home, which they are not used to. For the employees motivated by the work environment in their firms, working from home has led them to lose motivation and develop stress. As Mook (2021) explains, such issues have been exacerbated by idleness due to reduced work activities, direct and indirect health, economic and other experiences of Covid-19, and fear of uncertainty.
Mook (2021) explains that due to the effects of the pandemic, it is essential for leaders put more effort into motivating the employees. Mook (2021) suggests that acknowledgment or recognition is one of the most effective strategies that leaders can use to assist the employees in overcoming mental exhaustion and maintaining high motivational levels. Mook (2021) gives examples of the ways leaders can use the recognition strategy. They include showing appreciation for the work done, describing the things done well, encouraging repeat performance, and telling the employees why they are valued Organizational Challenges During Covid-19 .
Mook (2021) explains that 40 percent of Americans are motivated and add more effort when recognized based on past empirical findings. Also, 63 percent of Americans are unlikely to seek a job elsewhere if they are recognized frequently. Despite this, Mook (2021) emphasizes the need for leaders to engage in constructive criticism consistently. According to Mook (2021), however, recognition alone is not enough. The leaders should also increasingly use strategies for coaching and bringing the workers closer to them. For instance, they should guide the employees in developing soft skills, listening to them more, and engaging them in decision-making processes.

The information in the article by Mook (2021) relates to employee motivation and leadership style theories. One of the most relevant motivational models to the article is Herzberg’s Two-Factor theory. The model describes two categories of sources of workers’ motivation. The first consists of factors which, if not available as expected, the workers lose motivation (Ghaffari et al., 2017). An example is a salary. The second category consists of motivators, which, if availed, increase workers’ motivation. Recognition is one of the factors in that category (Ghaffari et al., 2017). Mook’s explanation of the impact of recognition in the article fits that of the Two-Factor theory. When the leaders use strategies such as praise in response to the workers’ efforts, the latter feel that they are valued and thus, put more effort into their work.
In addition, the content of the article relates to the participative leadership theory. According to the theory, the leaders that adopt a participative leadership style work closely with the subordinates, consult and support them and involve them in decision-making (Northouse, 2019) Organizational Challenges During Covid-19 .Mook (2021) suggests the need for the leaders to be closer to the employees and include them in decision-making. Unlike autocratic leadership, where leaders make decisions without involving the subordinates, the participative style enhances employees’ satisfaction and commitment to their job.
