Childhood obesity has become a major public health issue in recent years. The  goal is to stop childhood obesity before it begins. Prevention of childhood obesity requires understanding of the factors that influence it. The social-ecological model (SEM) can be used to better understand why childhood obesity occurs and the effect of potential prevention strategies. The SEM considers the complex interaction of individual, relationship, community and societal factors that put people at risk for obesity. The model illustrates how these four levels overlap and how factors at one level influence those at another level. The SEM also suggests that in order to prevent childhood obesity, it is necessary to implement interventions across multiple levels of the model at the same time.
