“Good to Great” Book Review

The P-O-L-C framework describes the functions and roles that managers should undertake to facilitate the success of their organizations. The roles are grouped into four categories, namely planning, leadership, organizing and controlling (Nicolescu, Plesoianu and Cîrstea 63). In his book titled “Good to Great,” Jim Collin’s describes how managers and leaders can make their organizations great. However, some of the recommendations given by Collins differ from those of the P-O-L-C framework The POLC Framework Assignment.

According to the P-O-L-C framework, planning process entails developing mission, vision, goals and objectives and formulating strategies for achieving them (Nicolescu, Plesoianu and Cîrstea 63). However, Collin argues that to make organizations great, greater focus should be given to developing the right team. According to Collins, relying too much on the visionary leaders increases the risk of failure when such leaders leave (Collins 41). However, Collins explains that vision, goals and objectives and achievement strategies are also essential.

According to the P-O-L-C framework, organizing entails creating suitable organizational design, culture and social networking among the staff (Nicolescu, Plesoianu and Cîrstea 63). While Collins does not underscore the importance of such organizing strategies, he emphasizes that managers should cultivate a culture of discipline and a climate in which people always talk the truth (Collins 66). According to Collins, staffing should entail, including only the right staff in the working teams.

In the P-O-L-C framework, leading encompasses roles such as motivation, creating wok groups or teams and making effective communication channels and good decisions (Nicolescu, Plesoianu and Cîrstea 63). Collins emphasizes that to make an organization great, emphasis should be given to making the right decisions through confronting the brutal facts (Collins 65). When making decisions, Collins emphasizes the need to ask questions to the workers rather than just giving them answers.

Last, the P-O-L-C framework posits that managers should control systems and human resources to get the desired results (Nicolescu, Plesoianu and Cîrstea 63). However, Collins argues that this is not a good strategy for firms that aim to become great. According to Collins, the managers should control the employees by creating a culture of discipline (Collins 120). When there is a perception of discipline, the employees undertake their roles effectively without significant control by the managers.
