Topic 8 DQ 1

One of the most recent human-caused disasters is the Covid- 19 pandemics.  From December 2019, coronavirus, which was first identified in Wuhan, China, has infected more than 185 million people globally and caused more than 4 million deaths (CDC, 2020). In the U.S., covid-19 has infected more than 34 million people in the past one-and-a-half years and resulted in more than 621,000 deaths (CDC, 2020). The high number of lives lost to covid-19 and the significant impact it has had on both the economic and social lives of people globally, therefore, warrants the classification of the covid-19 pandemic as a human-caused disaster. Over time there has also emerged as a scientific consensus that the covid-19 virus is of zoonotic origin, which means that it originated from closely related mammals or bats before infecting humans (Shereen et al., 2020). Covid-19, therefore, resulted from unwarranted contact between human beings and wild animals and can therefore be classified as a human-caused disaster (Shereen et al., 2020). Covid-19 has been one of the most significant public health challenges of the past century across the world.Covid-19 is a respiratory disease that leads to symptoms including fever, dry cough, tiredness, and the onset of pneumonia in severe cases (Shereen et al., 2020).

I chose the topic of Covid-19 as the most recent human-caused disaster because it relates to public health. The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic has therefore resulted in an increased role of public health nursing in providing guidelines to prevent the spread of the COVID 19 virus and public education on the importance of taking vaccinations to prevent populations from the dangerous respiratory illness. The Covid 19 pandemic has therefore brought the important role of public health nursing to focus.
