Evolving innovations, technologies, and evidence-based research have been appreciable changes in helping medical professionals with reliable, evidence-based sustained information to improve patient quality care and ensure safe and effective practice. Translational research innovations remain critical to this process. According to Pronovost et al. (2011), translational research ensures that patients actually receive the benefits of evidence-based prevention practices and reduce possible harm, increasingly identifying critical issues and recognizing the importance of evidence-based prevention practices or treatments.

Research findings impact and influence policy by informing the public which research can impact health-related policymaking and improve population health. Van Schalkwyk et al. 2018, disclose that research science in policymaking should be repetitive and promote change to achieve successful evidence and be adopted as best practice. Application of research findings of acceptable and realistic answers to policy support and understanding what works and what does not have driven balance values among researchers and policymakers (van Schalkawyk et al. 2018). Despite its intricate approach, translational research is highly innovative and beneficial to improve clinical effectiveness, healthcare service, and patient safety.

Outcome research has supported the use of telehealth as a viable solution to improve access to care safely. A health policy that was recently enacted to improving population health is telehealth policy liberalization under COVID 19. During the COVID pandemic telehealth services, have been a viable solution to enhance population access to care safely. Moreover, to actively communicate with patients and other health care professionals, address patient concerns, and provide preventative and specialty care delivery (Smith et al. 2021). Telehealth has proven highly beneficial to keeping patients safe during this crisis, achieving health equity, and allow access to services.

QUESTION- Define how translational research plays a role in influencing policy? Provide an example of a local health care policy that has been recently enacted and or is awaiting legislative passage that has been influenced by research.
Interest in translation research has rapidly developed over the recent past, in clinical and biomedical sciences. Translation research is a part of a continuum that involves moving research findings from the researcher’s bench to the patient’s bedside and then to the community. There are numerous ways in which translational research can influence policy including informing the policymakers which strategies are effective and which ones are not. Policies development uses a lot of resources however the policies do not always lead to change in practice or achievement of the desired target. To avoid this, then policies should be treated like health interventions where their development should be guided by translational research principles, (van Schalkwyk & Harris, 2018). Translational research findings are also used to guide the development of policies by providing evidence-based practices. Research findings also influence policy by providing information on the harm and benefits of solutions provided by the policy and identifying critical problems where policies should focus on.
Recent changes in Telehealth policy were enacted to increase access to care while protecting the patients and healthcare providers. The use of telehealth services was shown to be effective in facilitating public health mitigation strategies such as maintaining social distance which reduces the chances of exposure to the infection. This would consequently reduce the strain on healthcare facilities by minimizing the surge in the number of patients that require on facility care during the COVID-19 pandemic, (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021).
